MLAX RECAP: Gryphons 2022 Season Ends in National Semifinal Loss to Brock

PETERBOROUGH, Ont. - A memorable 2022 season officially came to an end for the Guelph Gryphons men's lacrosse team on Saturday evening at Trent University's Justin Chiu Stadium. The Gryphons were defeated 9-5 by the Brock Badgers in a 2022 Baggataway Cup semifinal matchup. The Gryphons, who finished the regular season with a 9-1 record, earned a bye through the Baggataway quarterfinal stage, but were unable to overcome their perennial OUA rivals from St. Catharines during Saturday's national semifinal affair. Brock's Andrew Rybka started the game off with a goal early on, followed by a second goal from Trent Hunter. After Guelph's Jabe Verbeek answered back, the Badgers were able to extend their lead with three more goals to take a 5-2 lead into halftime. The Gryphons fought hard in the second half, including another late goal from Verbeek in the closing moments of the game. But it would be the Badgers hanging on in the second half en route to a 9-5 victory. Brock will now face the Trent Excalibur on Sunday afternoon in the Baggataway Cup championship final. Jabe Verbeek was named 'Player of the Game' for the Gryphons, who lose for the first time to Brock this season after having defeated the Badgers in each of the two head-to-head meetings during the regular season. The championship game between Brock and Trent is set for 2pm on Sunday and can be seen live online at The Lacrosse Sports Network
