KITCHENER, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons baseball team has put together a sensational 2022 season. And they came agonizingly close to booking a spot in the OUA title game. On Friday afternoon (Oct. 14) at Jack Couch Park in Kitchener, the Gryphons were on the wrong end of a memorable pitcher's duel against the Queen's Gaels. When the dust settled, it was the Gaels coming out on top of a 1-0 ball game, with Queen's starting pitcher Jordan Leishman throwing a complete game shutout to put the Gaels through to Saturday's gold medal game. For the Gryphons, who also received an outstanding pitching performance from senior lefty,
Peter Zytner (8.0 IP, 7 hits, 1 run, 0 earned runs, 5 K, 103 pitches), the loss sends the Gryphs to the OUA bronze medal game on Saturday morning (10am) where they will face the Waterloo Warriors. The Warriors lost 7-2 in the first semifinal matchup on Friday to the University of Toronto, which means the Varsity Blues will have a chance to defend their 2021 OUA title when they face Queen's on Saturday afternoon.
