November 19, 2021 - The Department of Athletics is proud to announce the 2020-21 Academic Honour Roll on Friday, recognizing a record 282 student-athletes for classroom excellence during the most recent academic year.
 
The Gryphons tallied a record-high percentage of student-athletes who achieved 80% or higher in their respective field of study during the season. Out of the 683 student-athletes who compete at the OUA or U SPORTS level, a record number of 282 of those were able to reach the 80% plateau, or higher during the 2020-21 year.
 
For Irene Thompson, Interim Vice Provost, Student Affairs at the University of Guelph, it is an accomplishment that cannot be taken lightly. "The diligence it takes to be a successful student and athlete takes a great deal of motivation and focus, which was heightened during the pandemic. I am so inspired to see our Gryphons achieving these high standards in the classroom."
 
As a result, an impressive 41% of all student-athletes have earned the title of Academic Honour Roll recipients. The 282 total is also an increase of 51 from the previous year's total. Over the last ten years, the number of varsity honour roll recipients has increased by 78 per cent and the number of student-athletes on academic probation has decreased by 57 per cent.
 
"We are very proud of our student-athletes achieving these amazing accomplishments," said Scott McRoberts, Director of Athletics. "We've made a considerable investment into our student-athlete supports through a commitment of resources, staffing, and excellent recruiting efforts from our coaches. These efforts alongside gifts such as the Pearson Family Student-Athlete Mentor Program prove our investment has been well guided and these results prove it."
 
Improvements in the classroom have been significant in recent years and that includes outstanding graduation and retention rates. A total of 81% of student-athletes graduate from U of G in five years compared to 77% of all U of G students who graduate in five years.
