Box Score GUELPH, Ont. - Coming off a weekend that saw them win both of their games, the Guelph Gryphons went in to their Wednesday night contest seeking a third straight win. Playing host to the No. 4-nationally ranked Ryerson Rams, the Gryphs saw their win streak come to an end as they fell 87-55 to Ryerson.
Right from the early stages, the Gryphons were able to create plenty of offensive opportunities against a strong Ryerson side. However, despite spending plenty of time in the Ram's end of the court, the Gryphs were snake-bitten when trying to score. With multiple Gryphon field goals bouncing on the rim but ultimately staying out, the Rams were able to build themselves a 25-5 lead after one quarter of play.
With a big hill to climb after a tough start to the game, the Gryphons went to work. Rather than hanging their heads, Guelph instead began to push back. Coming up with some key stops on the defensive end, while converting on their chances offensively, the Gryphons were able to trim the lead from 20 down to 14 as the quarter went on. Then trailing by 15 just before the quarter was about to expire, the Gryphons came up with a steal, drove the ball forward and Reece Mungar drilled a three at the buzzer narrowing the gap to 38-26 at the half.
Unfortunately for the home team, the Rams came out of the half looking very much like the top five team in the country that they are. Finding a way to once again slow down the Guelph attack, Ryerson would go on to win the quarter by nine points to extend their lead.
Then in the final quarter of play the Gryphons continued to battle but the deficit proved too much to overcome. Playing up to the final whistle, the Gryphs were able to put up 17 points in the quarter, but the Rams would wind up pulling away for the win.
On the offensive end, the Gryphons had three scorers in double-digits. MacKeely Shantz led Guelph in scoring with 13 points, while both Sarah Holmes and Reece Mungar tallied 11. On the glass, Burke Bechard and Shantz both collected six rebounds each. Leading the team in assists with three was Skyla Minaker.
The Gryphons will now turn their attention to their final regular season home game of the 2019-20 season on Sunday when they play host to the Toronto Varsity Blues. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.
