GUELPH, Ont. – Throughout the 2020 fall semester, the University of Guelph Department of Athletics will be highlighting various members from our
Gryphon varsity teams as part of our "
BioSteel Student-Athlete Spotlight." This week's edition features
Emily Power, a third-year student-athlete on the
Gryphons women's lacrosse team who majors in bio-medical science.
TWO-SPORT STANDOUT BALANCES ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS
Since the first day she officially set foot on University of Guelph campus as a Gryphon student-athlete back in the fall of 2018, Emily Power has always shown the capacity to successfully balance her academic workload with her athletic demands.

The now 20-year-old Power is a key player on the Gryphons women's lacrosse team, where she has established herself as a fixture in the starting lineup while anchoring the back end of the Gryphon defence. But lacrosse is just one of the areas in which Emily Power has emerged as a standout athlete, with the Mississauga native also putting together a decorated ringette career. Her long list of ringette accomplishments includes representing Team Canada at the U21 World Ringette Championships in November of 2019 in Burnaby, B.C., where she helped lead her country to a gold medal, defeating Finland to capture top spot on the podium. At the club level in ringette, Emily earned the title of national champion with the Guelph Predators, taking home gold at the U19 Canadian Ringette National Championships in P.E.I. in the spring of 2019. Between her blossoming ringette career, and her involvement with the Guelph Gryphons women's lacrosse team, where she was named Team MVP following the 2019 season, there has been little "down time" in Emily Power's schedule since beginning life as a university student two years ago.

But throughout her time as a Gryphon and one of the country's top ringette players, Emily has made sure her academics remain the number one priority.
During the 2019-20 season, Emily Power was one of the 231 Gryphon student-athletes to be named an Academic Award Winners (given to varsity athletes who achieve 80% or higher in their respective fields of study). The bio-medical science major now has her sights set on taking her MCAT exam during the summer of 2021. But her academic interests expand beyond just her bio-medical science-related courses. Throughout her first two years at the University of Guelph, Emily also developed a keen interest in a variety of academic programs, excelling in both economics and math-related electives, areas which she says have become "second nature" to her. The current course load for Emily once again includes several electives which reflect her diverse academic interests. Like the rest of her fellow Gryphon student-athletes, the standout defender on the Gryphons women's lacrosse team was forced to put a pause on her varsity career this season, with the 2020 women's lacrosse season canceled due to coronavirus pandemic. But Emily remains committed to the Gryphon women's lacrosse program with the full intention to finish her varsity career in the fall of 2021 should OUA women's lacrosse return to play at that point. While the lacrosse and ringette schedule certainly looks different for Emily in 2020, the future remains bright in both disciplines.
