GUELPH, Ont. – Varsity student-athletes at the University of Guelph produced some impressive statistics this past year. But when you look back on the 2019-20 season, there is one statistic that stands out from the rest.
33%.
That is the record-high percentage of Gryphon varsity athletes who achieved 80% or higher in their respective field of study during the 2019-20 campaign. Out of the 683 Gryphon student-athletes who compete at the OUA or U SPORTS level, a record-number
231 of those were able to reach the 80% plateau, or higher. As a result, the Gryphons now boast a record ratio of 1-in-3 when it comes to student-athletes earning the title of Academic Award Winners. The 231 total is also an increase of 38 from the previous year's total, when 193 Gryphon student-athletes were named Academic Award Winners back in 2018-19.

Scott McRoberts was struck by the total number of Gryphon scholars.
"It was a record year for excellence in the classroom and we're so proud of our student-athletes," says McRoberts. "A season ago, we were thrilled to see 25.7% of our student-athletes receive 80% or higher. But to see that number jump up another 8% this season is truly an incredible feat. We're so proud to say that 1-in-3 Gryphon varsity athletes are standout scholars. I also want to thank all the members of the Gryphon staff for their dedication and commitment to supporting our student-athletes in so many ways. This list speaks volumes to not only the work our students have done in the classroom, but also the support systems that have been put in place to help our student-athletes reach new heights."
