PORT DOVER, Ont. – For a second straight season, the Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team made the trip to Norfolk County to hold a preseason matchup in the town of Port Dover, Ontario. And for a second straight season, the Gryphons left the shores of Lake Erie with the result they were looking for.
Saturday night (Sept. 21), the Gryphons men's hockey team erased a two-goal deficit to complete a come-from-behind 5-4 overtime win over the Brock Badgers. The Gryphons, who trailed 4-2 after 40 minutes of play, battled back to force OT with sophomore standout Connor Bramwell scoring the game-winner, his second of the night. Saturday night's game marked the 2nd edition of the annual "Dover Coast Cup" with the Gryphons now victorious in both games following the team's 4-3 win over Laurier a season ago.
"The support we've received from the people here in Port Dover has been outstanding," said Gryphons head coach Shawn Camp. "Our players and coaches love making the trip down here and our guys showed some great resilience tonight to fight their way back into the game. We're thrilled to be involved in the Dover Coast Cup and are glad to keep that trophy in Gryphon hands for another year."
Todd Winder, Ted Nichol, and Matt Timms were the other goal scorers for the Gryphons, who are off to a 2-0 start to their 2019 preseason schedule.
Saturday night's meeting in Port Dover actually marked the second consecutive head-to-head matchup of the preseason schedule for the Gryphons and Badgers, who also met eight days earlier in St. Catharines where Guelph won 4-1 to spoil Brock's homecoming. The Gryphons will now prepare for a weekend trip to northern Ontario as the team heads to Thunder Bay for a pair of preseason games with the Lakehead Thunderwolves (Friday, Sept. 27 & Sunday, Sept. 28). The puck will officially drop on the 2019-20 OUA regular season schedule on Friday, October 4 when the Gryphons travel to Toronto for a Friday night matchup with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues.
