WSCR: Gryphons and No. 7-ranked Mustangs Play to 1-1 Draw

Vanessa Mazur's 9th minute tally is the first goal conceded by Western this season

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's soccer team did something no other OUA team has done this season: find a way to score on the OUA West-leading Western Mustangs. Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Gryphons (6-1-3) and Mustangs (8-0-3) battled to a 1-1 draw in a matchup of the top two teams in the OUA West division. The Mustangs entered the contest as the No. 7-ranked team in the country and had yet to concede a goal, posting 10 consecutive shutouts to start the season. The Gryphons put an end to that streak with a goal from third-year forward Venessa Mazur in the 9th minute.

Mazur's 3rd goal of the season came off a corner kick to give the Gryphons a lead that would hold most of the night. Kate KnafelcBut the Mustangs would finally break through with a goal Melanie Walters in the 87th minute to salvage a draw. With the result, the Mustangs remain six points ahead of second-place Guelph in the OUA West standings with just four games remaining in the regular season schedule.

"You had two good teams really going at it," says Gryphons head coach Shayne Campbell, who led the Gryphons to an OUA title in 2017-18. "They had the balance of the first half against us. Even though we were able to get that early goal, I thought we got caught defending the rest of the half instead of continuing to really go after something. In the second half, we had a good response. But overall, it was just a tight game that was always going to come down to a couple moments. We got ours early in the game and they got theirs late."

The Gryphons will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they host the Windsor Lancers at 1pm in the team's first annual "Gryphon Soccer Day."
