With only four games remaining in the Guelph Gryphons 2019 OUA regular season schedule and just two matches left to be played at home, the Gryphons made sure to make the most of their home pitch Sunday afternoon.
Playing host to the Windsor Lancers at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, Guelph found the back of the net three times in the opening half, and road that momentum to a 3-0 victory.
Playing their second match in three days, the Gryphons got out to a fast start and began to set the tone early. In the 15th minute of the contest Sydney Johnson sent in a perfect ball on a corner kick and Jacqueline Madogo got her head on it directing the ball past the Windsor keeper. The goal for Madogo was her first as a Gryphon. After the 15th minute marker, the home side continued to keep the pressure on. Into the 38th minute, Venessa Mazur made her presence felt for the second straight match. Having scored the lone tally against Western on Friday, Mazur got on the scoresheet again giving Guelph a 2-0 lead over the Lancers. Then just five minutes later, in the 43rd minute Mazur struck again. After taking feed from Kate Knafelc, Mazur beat Windsor keeper Lauren Gellner for the second time to make it 3-0.
Holding the three goal advantage heading into the second half, the Gryphons played a clean second forty-five minutes to secure the 3-0 victory. Making her 8th start of the season in goal, Gryphon's keeper Brooke Davidson recorded her 4th clean sheet of the season.
"One of the things we talked to the girls about was making sure we had a really positive start and wanting to put a lot of pressure on (Windsor) right from the beginning, and I felt the group did that especially well," said Gryphon's Head Coach Shayne Campbell. "When you score early like that it's very important not to lose your structure and your shape, and I thought defensively everyone did a really good job."
With the victory, the Gryphons improved to 7-1-3 on the season and maintained their second place spot in the West. Guelph will continue their regular season schedule on Friday when they travel to St. Catharines to take on the Brock Badgers. The Gryphons will return home on October 18 to host McMaster.
