GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team picked up another valuable win Friday night at home. And it was a familiar name coming through with the game's biggest moment.
Alex Zis, Guelph's star midfielder who has returned to the University of Guelph following two years in the NCAA, provided the lone goal of the game, curling home a free kick to lift the host Gryphons to a 1-0 win over the visiting Western Mustangs on Friday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.
For Zis, a marketing management major from Oakville, the 26th minute tally marked his team-leading 8th goal of the season, making him the second-ranked goal scorer in the OUA in 2019.
The goal would prove to be enough for the Gryphons who were able to record their fourth clean sheet in their last six matches. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 6-1-3 on the season (wins-losses-draws) while Western falls to 4-5-2.
"We defended very well today, and we had to because Western played very well," said Gryphon's Head Coach Keith Mason. "I don't want to make excuses but we had five first-year players start in this game, and I can be nothing but ecstatic with the performance they put forth for our team. We were excellent, they did everything we asked them to, we rolled with the pressure when it came and we got the all important goal in the first half."
The Gryphons will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when they host the Windsor Lancers at 1pm in the team's first annual "
Gryphon Soccer Day."
