MSCR: Lefebvre Scores Twice in Gryphon’s Victory

Goals seemed to be very hard to come by for most of the match Sunday afternoon between the Guelph Gryphons and Windsor Lancers at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. However, in the second half, one man for Guelph was able to break through, and not just once but twice in a 2-0 win for the Gryphons.

With neither team having found the back of the net during the first 60 minutes of the match, 4th-year striker Mitch Lefebvre decided to make his mark. It was in the 62nd minute when the Gryphons were able to break through. Making a run towards the Windsor goal, Lefebvre found himself on the receiving end of a gorgeous ball from Guelph's leading scorer Alexander Zis. Once the ball was on Lefebvre's boot, he made no mistake to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead. Then in the 79th minute, Lefebvre got to a loose ball in the Windsor box and again found the back of the net to double the Guelph advantage.

The game was a tale of two halves, as the Gryphons seemed to be just a bit off on their runs, passes and timing in the first 45-minutes. The Lancers did their best to take advantage, but were unable to get a ball past Guelph keeper Darlington Murasiranwa. Unfortunately for the Gryphon's, Murasiranwa was subbed out at halftime after suffering an apparent injury on a save. Entering the game for Darlington to start the second half, Erik Hermanns was able to hold down the fort and keep the clean sheet for the home team. During the second half of play the Gryphons as a team were much more on the same page leading to multiple offensive chances including their two goals.

"We were to slow and to lethargic in the first half, our legs looked a little bit heavy and I was disappointed at halftime that we hadn't performed to the levels that we had be showing lately," said Gryphon's Head Coach Keith Mason. "In the second half though, the boys turned it up and got a lot more pressure on Windsor. We got in behind them a lot more, and in the end I felt we were deserving of the 2-0 victory."

Now with a 7-1-3 record, the Gryphons will prepare for a trip to St. Catharines on Friday to take on the Brock Badgers. Guelph currently sits top spot in the West, three points ahead of the York Lions.
