GUELPH, Ont. - The road to four straight OUA Women's Rugby championships is alive and well for the Guelph Gryphons. The three-time defending champions are heading back to the OUA Championship game after taking down the McMaster Marauders Friday night at Varsity Field. Scoring 13 tries, the Gryphons rolled to a 77-24 victory over the visitors from Hamilton. With the win, the Gryphon's also punched their ticket to Nationals which will take place in Ottawa at the end of October.
Julia Schell led the way for the home side throughout the match scoring four tries and successfully making six converts. Overall, the Gryphons had seven different players put the ball down in the McMaster end zone. Hannah Beaumont, Emilie P.Belanger, April Wright, Sidney Brown, Talia Hoffman and Emmanuela Jada helped round out the other Gryphon's tries.
"Before the game we talked about just making memories for our fifth years playing their last game on their home turf and playing in front of our home fans," said Gryphon's Head Coach Colette McAuley.
"Our condition over the last few weeks really paid off," McAuley said. " We have been working on that defensive conditioning and in the second half we continued to put that pressure on them.
With the Queen's Gaels getting the better of the Brock Badgers 74-3, the Gryphons will now travel to Kingston on Friday to take on the Gaels in the OUA Championship. Kick-off for the title match is scheduled for 7:00pm.
