WHKY: Gryphons Offence Erupts in 9-1 Win Over Laurentian

Lantz, Davison and Rookie Ianni Net Two Goals Each

GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team has had some impressive outings in recent seasons en route to a couple OUA championships. But none of them surpassed the offensive outburst the Gryphons produced Saturday afternoon on home ice. Guelph put it all together and were utterly dominant in defeating the Laurentian Voyageurs 9-1 at Gryphon Centre Arena.

Sydney Davison, Miranda Lantz, and rookie Lauren Ianni each scored twice, while Ashlee Lawrence, Kristen Jay, and Katie Mikkelsen all added a goal each. Aurore Beaulieu got the call to start in the Guelph net and made 22 saves to pick up her second win of the season.

Ianni gave the team an early lift by scoring the first goal of her OUA career on the power play at 4:42 of the opening period. Guelph worked the puck well on the man advantage with a nice tic-tac-toe between captain Kaitlin Lowy, Claire Merrick and Ianni, who parked near the left post and buried a one-timer behind Karen Collins for a 1-0 lead.

Davison doubled the lead later in the period on an excellent individual effort. She stripped the puck from a Laurentian defender, went to the net and tried to make a pass but it bounced off another Voyageur's skate and right back to Davison, who then finished into an empty net with the goaltender out of position.

Lantz added a shorthanded dagger at 2:54 of the second period and then put in her second of the day less than four minutes later for a commanding 4-0 lead, which chased Collins from the net for Shanna Dolighan. The goaltending change didn't do much for the struggling Voyageurs.

After Ianni notched the second of her young career to make it 5-0, Laurentian defenceman Carley Olivier broke the goose egg with her team's only goal of the game. Guelph would then score three more in under one minute of play before Jay closed out the scoring at the 17:05 mark.

It was the biggest output in recent memory for the Gryphons, who have now won five straight games.

Gryphon Take
"We talked about making sure we had a quick start because they were coming off a game last night. We wanted to set the pace and move pucks early. We did that well. It was great because the offence came from everywhere. Our top line has been carrying the scoring for us so it was nice to spread it around. Special teams were excellent. There were plenty of good performances." – head coach Rachel Flanagan

The Record
Guelph is 6-1-0-0.
