GUELPH, Ont. – Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre, the U of G women's hockey team had their five-game win streak snapped after suffering a 2-1 overtime loss to the visiting Nipissing Lakers. The Gryphons jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a power play goal from rookie forward
Lauren Ianni, who tipped home a
Gabrielle Smyth point shot to put the Gryphons in front 1-0. For Ianni, a rookie forward from Markham, it was her third goal in the last two games, all of which have come on the power play.
The Lakers would respond later in the period, however, with Zosia Davis firing a wrist shot past Val Lamenta to tie the game at 1-1. The Gryphons outshot the Lakers 16-9 in the 2nd period, with the best scoring chance coming with around six minutes remaining. With the Gryphons on the power play, Nipissing's goalie Danika Ranger seemed down and out but somehow managed to reach back with her stick to deny
Karli Shell of a sure goal. After a scoreless 3rd period, the Lakers would end it with a goal just seven seconds into the extra frame when Nipissing assistant captain Zosia Davis scored her second of the night to hand the Gryphons the loss.
