WATERLOO, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's hockey team picked up 3-1 road win Saturday night in a penalty-filled affair at the University of Waterloo. The host Warriors racked up 55 minutes of penalties (compared to just 12 for Guelph) leading to a pair of power play goals from the Gryphons, with
Marc Stevens and
Cody Thompson both finding the back of the net for the visiting Gryphs. Rookie goalie
Evan Cormier was sharp in net for U of G, turning away 28 of the 29 shots sent his way for the win.
After a scoreless opening period, the Gryphons got on the board when Marc Stevens fired home a one-timer from the right faceoff circle, beating Warriors' goalie Julian Sime gloveside. After the Warriors tied the game at 1-1, Guelph would respond with another power player marker as OUA West all-star Cody Thompson showed off some nice hands in to give the Gryphons a 2-1 lead heading to the 3rd.
In the final period, Gryphon rookie goalie Evan Cormier would come up big on several occasions, including denying Keigan Goetz with a nice glove save on a shorthanded breakaway. Gryphons' fourth-year defenceman
Zach McFadden would seal the win with an empty-netter late to give the Gryphons their third win of the season.
Gryphon Take
"We were the more disciplined team tonight and were able to take advantage of that with a couple power play goals. For the most part, we've been playing the right way as a team over the last stretch of games but just haven't been scoring the way we need to. Tonight, the guys were able to produce a few key goals and we had some timely saves from Evan (Cormier), so it was a good team win." ~ Gryphons head coach
