LONDON, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons men's soccer team were in search of one more important win. With the OUA postseason approaching, three more points would earn the Gryphons a first-round bye. The side often has a flair for the dramatic and despite leaving it late, the Gryphons got what they were looking for after an 87
th-minute goal from central defender
Conor O'Callaghan pulled out a 1-0 victory over the Western Mustangs on a windy Friday night in London.
Guelph was hungry to take the match and the winner came from a late set piece. The visitors sent a corner into the area and while an initial shot on target was blocked, O'Callaghan did well to pounce on the ball around the edge of the six-yard box , swivel and fire a rocket into the far post from a tight angle for the Gryphons' biggest goal of the season.
The win secures second place in the OUA West for Guelph, meaning they will be off midweek and host an OUA quarter-final next weekend at the Gryphon Soccer Complex. Guelph has 32 points, behind only the first-place York Lions, and now sit seven points ahead of both the McMaster Marauders and Western.
The Gryphons began the match in a 3-5-2 to switch things up a bit but reverted to their more typical formation in the second half, which enabled them to get the better of the ball. They would have the wind with them in the second half and pressured the Mustangs in the buildup to O'Callaghan's winner.
Erik Hermanns got the start in net for the Gryphons with first choice keeper
Ryan Collins suspended from a red card in Guelph's last match. Hermanns didn't face many shots but did well to punch away some threatening Western crosses and be a presence in the Guelph box.
Gryphon Take
"It was big. It was a very tight game and both teams were battling. It was just a huge goal from Conor. All the credit to the boys. They didn't give up. They wanted to get the three points and make Sunday's game irrelevant in terms of the table." –
head coach Keith Mason
The Record
Guelph is 10-3-2.
