GUELPH –
Erin Coates (women's golf) and
Mitchell Ogilvie (men's lacrosse) have been named
Gryphon MUSCLE MLK Athletes of the Week for the period ending September 17, 2017.
Erin Coates - Women's Golf
The Guelph Gryphons women's golf team is getting familiar with the podium. Erin Coates, a first-year player, was the latest to make the medals after winning the UOIT Invitational on Monday, Sept. 18 with a low score of 80. It was just the second tournament of the Guelph's native OUA golf career but Coates displayed veteran poise throughout the event. The U of G Arts major shot 42 on the front nine, equaling her teammate Linnea Knutsson, who finished second overall. But Coates fired a 38 on the back, making a number of clutch putts along the way for an impressive first OUA tournament win.
Mitchell Ogilvie - Cross Country
Rookie midfielder Mitchell Ogilvie had quite the breakout on the road in Sudbury this week. The Peterborough, ON native and Commerce major got things going early in the Guelph Gryphons' 18-10 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs Sunday, scoring a goal in the opening minute of the game to give his team a 1-0 lead. But that was just the beginning. Ogilvie would go on to score four more times, while chipping in four assists, to play a part in half of Guelph's 18-goal offensive explosion. The first-year player was a problem for Laurentian all day. One of his more memorable moments of the afternoon came when he created a turnover and immediately made the hosts pay by scoring unassisted.
