MHKY: 5-goal 2nd Period Lifts Concordia Past Guelph

MONTREAL, QC - Saturday evening in Montreal, the Gryphons men's hockey team suffered a 6-3 loss to the No. 10-ranked Concordia Stingers. Concordia exploded for five goals in the 2nd period to improve to 18-7-2 on the season. The Gryphons meanwhile fall to 15-10-1 with just two games remaining on the regular season schedule.

After picking up an impressive road win on Friday night at UQTR, the Gryphons made the trip to Montreal to face one of the top teams in the conference in the Concordia Stingers. Entering Saturday night's matchup, the Stingers had won 10 of their 13 home games on the season, but it would be the Gryphs who would jump out to the early lead. First year forward Marc Stevens would score his 7th goal of the season to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead just over seven minutes into the game. Stevens, a former member of the Guelph Storm, would score a pair of goals on the night for his second multi-goal performance of the season.

Concordia would tie the game at 1-1 at the 14:30 mark of the 1st period. The game would remain tied until the midway point of the 2nd period. That's when the Stingers blew things wide open. Concordia would score a total of five goals over the span of 8:22 during the latter half of the 2nd period. Despite a pair of 3rd period goals from the Gryphs, with Marc Stevens and Seth Swenson the goal scorers, the Stingers would go on to win 6-3.

Keith Hamilton suffered the loss in net for Guelph, making 26 saves on 32 shots. The Gryphons outshot Concordia 34-32 on the night.

The Gryphons, who currently sit 4th in the OUA West, will close out their regular season schedule with a home-and-home matchup against the No. 3-ranked team in the country in the Ryerson Rams (20-4-2). The Gryphons will travel to Toronto on Tuesday, Feb. 7th to face the Rams, before hosting the Rams on Thursday, Feb. 9 at the Gryphon Centre.
