FH: Gryphons Keep Rolling with 5-2 Win Over western

Guelph Extends Winning Streak to Five Games

GUELPH – Momentum hasn't slowed for the Guelph Gryphons field hockey team. The Gryphons have evolved into one of the most dangerous teams in the OUA, displaying a balance of defensive grit and offensive ability. Guelph showed its skills again Wednesday with a big 5-2 win over the Western Mustangs in the 1st Annual Mental Health Awareness game under the lights at Varsity Field.

The Gryphons (7-1-2) have now won five straight games, outscoring opponents 18-2 during the impressive run. The latest victory was a result of an intelligent, unselfish approach, qualities that head coach Michelle Turley appreciates with the post-season approaching.

"We passed very well and made things look easy," said Turley. "Keeping possession is the key to winning. The best passing teams dictate the play, conserve energy, make the best of their resources and score more goals. Passing is about technique, judgment and vision.

"We need to continue this style of play over the next few weeks as the championships draw near."

Kayla Magarelli had two goals and an assist, while Kendra Puttick, Alice Stubbings and Olivia Finch also scored.

Guelph was patient early and eventually got on the board in the 21st minute of play. Puttick opened the scoring when she finished a pass from Magarelli, for her second goal in as many games. Then the flood gates opened for the Gryphons. Magarelli, a converted midfielder, who has been on fire with six goals and an assist in her previous three games, made it 2-0 two minutes later. Stubbings then tipped a Rebecca Plouffe shot to cap a three-goal Guelph outburst in a span of five minutes.

Western got one back late in the first half but the Gryphons were right back at it in the second, beginning with another Magarelli goal in the sixth minute. With Guelph up 4-2, Finch capped the scoring from a penalty corner to ensure a fifth straight win.

Magarelli is second in the OUA scoring race.

The Gryphons wrap up the regular season with games against Toronto and Waterloo on Sun. Oct. 22 at York University.
