WBB: Gryphons Drop Hard-Fought Road Game versus No. 4-Ranked Ravens

OTTAWA, ON - Friday night in Ottawa, the Gryphons women's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the No. 4-ranked team in the country before ultimately falling 75-67 to the Carleton Ravens. With 9:23 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Gryphons had managed to trim the deficit to just four points following a Quincy Sickles-Jarvis jump shot that made the score 58-54. That is as close as the Gryphs would get however, as Carleton would immediately respond with a 12-2 run to put the game out of reach. It was an impressive performance by the Gryphons, who were threatening to become the first OUA team to win at the Ravens' Nest. Carleton is now a perfect 5-0 on their home court this season, and 10-1 overall. The Gryphs meanwhile fall to 1-10 on the season.

Leading the way for Guelph on Friday was third year guard Samantha Renshaw (Fort Erie, ON). Renshaw, a Marine & Freshwater Biology student, finished the night with a career-high 21 points on 7-of-16 shooting. 10 of Renshaw's 21 points came in the third quarter alone, where the Gryphs outscored Carleton 24-20 to make it just a four-point game heading to the fourth. Fellow guard Megan Brenkel also had a strong performance for the Gryphs, filling up the stat sheet with 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. Second year forward Ashley Wheeler racked up 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting and has been one of the team's most consistent scorer's, finishing in double digits in scoring in seven of her 10 games this season.

Defensively, the Gryphons were able to force the Ravens into 24 turnovers on the night, compared to just 12 turnovers by the Gryphs. However, it was the Ravens who controlled the glass, out-rebounding Guelph 51-30 on the evening.

The Gryphons will spend the night in Ottawa and will be right back in action again on Saturday night when they travel to Montpetit Hall to face the 8-3 Ottawa Gee-Gees. Tip is set for 6pm and can be seen live online at www.oua.tv.
