GUELPH, ON - Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium, the Gryphons women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against the No. 4-ranked team in the country in the York Lions.
The York Lions came into Guelph riding a six-game win streak to start their season and outscoring opponents 29-1 on the season. The Gryphons became the first team this season to take points off the Lions (6-0-1) and remain undefeated themselves with a record of 3-0-3 (wins-losses-draws).Â
The Gryphons came close to opening the scoring early in the second half when rookie striker
Victoria Hinchliffe showed great speed to chase down a long ball. Hinchliffe was able to get off a strong left-footed strike, only to see it turned away by York's keeper.
Defensively, the Gryphons received a strong team effort en route to recording their fourth clean sheet of the season.
Nicole'r Brown-Shaw was part of the Gryphons rock solid play at the back end. The centre defender delivered a potential goal-saving slide tackle on a York attacker who was bearing down on Gryphons goalkeeper
Libby Brenneman.
The Gryphons now head to London on Saturday, Sept. 24 to face the Mustangs. Last season, the Gryphons knocked Western out of the postseason with a 1-0 victory in the OUA's preliminary round.
