MLAX: Badgers Spoil Home Opener and Hand Gryphons First Loss of 2016

GUELPH, ON - Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex, the Gryphons men's lacrosse team suffered their first loss of the season as the visiting Brock Badgers won 16-6. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 2-1 on the season while Brock improves to 3-0.

Following the game, Gryphons head coach Sam Kosakowski reflected on the loss, "Brock was just better prepared than we were.  Normally, our defence is among the best in the county and our offence can put up good numbers. But today, we struggled…and it showed."

In the first half alone, the Gryphons committed 17 turnovers to Brock's 9.  Possession in field lacrosse, is a key part of the game, and the Gryphons were unable to maintain a hold of the ball for any length of time during the game.  Early in the game, the Gryphon defence stripped the Badgers of the ball several times but was unable to secure the ground balls.  Brock, left to continue on offense, seemingly scored at will and at the end of the first, the Gryphons were down 5-1.

The second quarter was much the same as the first with Brock outscoring the Gryphons 4-1 in the quarter to take a 9-2 lead at the half. At no point in the game could the Gryphons gain any momentum.   Any time the team scored, Brock would respond.  The Badgers outscored Guelph 3-2 in both the 3rd and 4th quarters to finish with a 16-6 win over Guelph.

The Gryphons will have a chance to regroup this week as they take on Laurier at home on Wednesday at 7:30pm and then McMaster next Sunday at 1pm.
