GUELPH, ON – Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex the Gryphons women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw with the Brock Badgers. Through four games this season, the Gryphons remain undefeated at 2-0-2 (wins-losses-draws) while the Badgers sit at 1-3-1.
The Gryphons dominated play throughout the second half but were never able to put the finishing touches on any of the chances they were able to create. One of the best scoring chances of the match came on a long range strike from veteran defender
Sam Taylor (London, ON) who saw her shot deflect off the bar and out of harm's way.
The rookie striker tandem of
Victoria Hinchliffe and
Jacquie Preza formed the Gryphons duo up front. Second year striker
Hayley Howes subbed into the game pushing Preza out wide, but nobody on the Gryphons Sunday afternoon possessed the final touch needed to break the Badger defence.
Third year Criminal Justice and Public Policy major
Libby Brenneman earned the clean sheet in net for the Gryphons. The chances were few and far between for the Badgers, but Brock was able to break through midway through the second half, only to see their shot on a partial breakaway miss wide of the target.
While the Gryphons lack of finishing was frustrating at times on Sunday, the team's defensive performance was once again a positive. Through four matches this season, the Gryphons have conceded just twice, with both of those goals coming in the season opener followed by three consecutive clean sheets.
The Gryphons will now head to Hamilton for a Wednesday night showdown with the McMaster Marauders. The Gryphons were able to edge the Marauders 1-0 when the two teams met back on Sept. 2 in what was the Gryphons home opener.
