LONDON, ON - Sunday afternoon in London, the Gryphons women's rugby team opened their 2016 season with a 77-7 victory over the Western Mustangs. Eight different Gryphon players recorded tries while
Alexandra King was good on six converts.
As the final scoreline might suggest, the Gryphons dominated in the scrum throughout the game. Reigning Shiels Division Rookie of the Year,
Julia Schell, gave the Gryphons an early lead with the team's first try of the match. The Mustangs were able to answer back with a try of their own, but from the 20 minute mark on, the Gryphons were able to keep possession and pour in 27 more points to take control of the game.
In the second half, the Mustangs were barely able to touch the ball as the Gryphons excelled in point of contact as well as ball placement and retention.
Fourth year flanker
Alyssa McDonald and
Julia Schell each had three tries. Second year forward
Mathea Roesink scored a pair of tries. While
Bronwyn McCrone,
Megan Acheson,
Madison Brattan,
Sarah Campbell and
Alexandra King each had one try.
The Gryphons will once again play on the road next Saturday (Sept. 17) when they travel to Brock to face the Badgers at 3pm.
