GUELPH, ON - Saturday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre, the Gryphons women's hockey team won 5-0 over the visiting Queen's Gaels. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 6-1-1 while the Gaels fall to 4-4-0. Reigning CIS Player of the Year
Valerie Lamenta made 26 saves for the shutout while
Brittany St. James and
Stephanie Gava each finished with three points apiece to help extend the Gryphons win streak to four games.
On Thursday night, Gryphons goalie and reigning CIS Player of the Year Valerie Lamenta got off to a slow start versus York. On Saturday afternoon versus Queen's, there would be no slow start. Lamenta was solid from start to finish, and helped the Gryphons weather some early pressure from the Gaels in the opening period.
The Gryphons would open the scoring at the midway point of the opening period thanks to some pretty passing between Gava and St. James. Gava, a rookie forward from Mississauga, would score her second of the season, and second in as many games, to give the Gryphons a 1-0 lead heading to the 2nd.
47 seconds into the 2nd period, the Gryphons would extend their lead to 2-0. Co-captain
Kelly Gribbons would split a pair of Queen's defenders and head in all alone on a breakaway, beating Queen's goalie Stephanie Pascal blocker side for her 5th goal of the season and team-leading 10th point of the season. The 2nd period would be bookended with Gryphon goals as U of G would strike with 28 second remaining in the period. Rookie
Sydney Davison's team-leading 6th goal of the season made it a 3-0 game. Davison has now scored in three straight contests as the Gryphons were in control heading to the 3rd.
After
Sophie Contant made it a 4-0 game, the Gryphons scoring would be capped off with
Brittany St. James scoring her first of the season. St. James, who left the game late in regulation after blocking a shot, finished the night with 1 goal and 2 assists. The St. James/Gava/Davison line combined for 8 points on the night while a total of 10 different Gryphon skaters put their names on the score sheet.
Up next for the Gryphons, a mid-week trip to Toronto on Wednesday, November 9 to face the York Lions.
