THUNDER BAY, ON - Friday night in Thunder Bay, the Gryphons men's hockey team poured in a season-high eight goals in an 8-5 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves. With the win, the Gryphons improve to 6-7-0 while Lakehead falls to 6-5-1.
The Gryphons jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first period of play, with five different goal scorers finding the back of the net in what was a dominant opening 20 minutes of play. The lead would grow to 6-0 midway through the second period on a goal from Rob Lepine, but the Thunderwolves would fight back in what quickly turned into a shootout in Thunder Bay. The Thunderwolves scored four straight goals to make it a 6-4 game before Seth Swenson and Nick Boyer sealed the win with back to back goals midway throught the third.Â
A total of eight Gryphons recorded multi-point nights with Seth Swenson and Rob Lepine leading the way with three points apiece (1 G, 2 A). Nick Boyer was the lone Gryphon to score multiple goals, finishing with two on the night. Joining Boyer as goal scorers on the night were Lepine, Swenson, Mac Nichol, Zach McFadden, Josh McFadden and Marc Stevens. The Gryphons outshot Lakehead 34-28 on the night with Scott Stajcer picking up the win in net.
The Gryphons will hope they have a few more goals left in the tank after the offensive outburst as these two teams will square off once again on Saturday night. Puck drop in Thunder Bay is set for 7:30pm on Saturday.
