GUELPH, ON - Wednesday night at Varsity Field, the Gryphons field hockey team played to a 1-1 tie against the visiting York Lions. With the result, the Gryphons record now sits at 7-0-2 on the season while the Lions boast a record of 4-1-2.
Meeting for a second time in a five day stretch, the Gryphons and Lions combined for an entertaining game Wednesday night that was played a quick tempo throughout. After failing to capitalize on some excellent scoring opportunities earlier in the match, the Gryphons would open the scoring just past the half hour mark when rookie
Alexa Corrado (Waterloo, ON) scored on a reverse lift. For Corrado, it was her second goal of the season and her second in as many games after also scoring in Guelph's 8-0 win over McGill on Sunday.
Olivia Lane (Guelph, ON) and
Nicole Paola (Waterloo, ON) picked up assists on the play as the Gryphons led 1-0.
However, in the second half, York was able to find the equalizer at the 55 minute mark to tie things up at 1-1. Late in the game the Gryphons were able to once again produce some excellent scoring opportunities but were unable to convert as the Gryphons and Lions finished in a tie for the second time in the same week. Back on Saturday, October 1st the two teams played to a 2-2 draw.
The Gryphons remain in first place but with a narrow two point lead over Toronto who also have a game in hand.
Up next for the Gryphons, another home game on Wednesday, October 12 when they take on the visiting Western Mustangs. Game time is set for 7:30pm at Varsity Field.
