LONDON, ON - Friday night in London, the Gryphons were unable to claw back after a slow start and ultimately fell short losing 6-4 to the Western Mustangs. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 3-4-0 on the season while the Mustangs improve to 4-2-0.
Before Friday night's game was seven minutes old, the Western Mustangs had built up a 3-0 lead. Despite the disappointing start, the Gryphons were able to fight their way back into the game with a pair of goals to trim the deficit to one. The first goal of the night for the Gryphons came from third year winger
Seth Swenson who was rewarded after forcing a Western turnover deep in the Mustangs end of the ice. Swenson would finish from in close for his second goal in as many games as the Gryphons now trailed 3-1. With under two minutes to go in the opening period, the Gryphons would strike again. A three-on-one break for the Gryphons would end with
Cody Thompson sending a saucer pass onto the tape of
Rob Lepine, who would pot his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Lepine, who had also assisted on Guelph's first goal of the game, now has eight points through six games this season, as a goal-filled opening 20 minutes of play saw Western leading 3-2 heading to the second.
Â
The Mustangs lead would grow to 5-2 in the second period, but in the final frame, the Gryphons would once again show some life.
Reilly O'Connor's point shot would deflect to
Trevor Morbeck who would pot his second of the season into an open net to make it a 5-3 game with 8:55 remaining. Western would answer less than a minute later to restore their lead however, as the Mustangs would hang on to come out on top of a 10-goal game.
Trevor Morbeck capped the scoring on the night with his second of the season to make the final score 6-4 Western.
The Gryphons will be right back in action on Saturday night as they travel to St. Catharines to face the Brock Badgers (2-3-0).
