MHKY: Badgers Edge Gryphons 3-2

ST. CATHARINES, ON - Saturday evening in St. Catharines, the Gryphons men's hockey team out-chanced, out-shot and out-worked the Brock Badgers. The difference was, the Badgers finished their scoring chances while the Gryphons did not. Brock won the game 3-2. Guelph outshot the Badgers 51 to 31 on the night. With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 3-5-0 while Brock improves to 3-3-0.

The Gryphons were able to get off to a good start with Marc Stevens opening the scoring at the 8:42 mark of the opening period. Stevens finished off some nice passing by linemates Tryg Strand and Scott Simmonds to give Guelph a 1-0 lead. Brock would storm back with two goals later in the period, including a short-handed goal that came with just :58 seconds left in the 1st period, as Brock led 2-1 heading to the 2nd. A power play goal from Brock in the 2nd extended their lead to 3-1. The Gryphons would make it a one-goal game late in the third on a nice goal from Tryg Strand. After taking a pass through the neutral zone, Strand would beat a Brock defenceman and fire home a quick shot to make it a 3-2 game with 1:41 remaining. The Gryphons would pull the goalie late for an extra attacker but were unable to find the equalizer.

One night after firing 47 shots on the Mustangs, the Gryphons once again produced plenty of scoring opportunities and sent 51 shots Brock's way. The Gryphons and Badgers, who were involved in a heated preseason game back in September, once again saw tempers fly with the two teams combining for 34 minutes of penalties.

The Gryphons will now return home to face Carleton on Friday, Nov. 4th and RMC on Saturday, Nov. 5th.
