MLAX: Gryphons Wrap Up Reg. Season with 19-8 Win Over Toronto

GUELPH, ON - Sunday afternoon at the Gryphon Soccer Complex the Gryphons men's lacrosse team wrapped up their regular season schedule with a 19-8 win over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. With the result, the Gryphons finish the regular season with an 8-4 record and a lock on third place in the West division.

The Gryphons built upon a 5-1 first quarter lead and took a 10-3 lead into the half. Despite a third quarter let down that saw the Blues outscore the Gryphons 5-3, Guelph went on a 6-0 run in the final quarter to wrap up their 19-8 win.

"We dominated on both sides of the ball." said Gryphons assistant coach Dan Cannon. "We got everyone into the game, and everyone contributed."

14 Gryphons recorded points in the game; an indication that the team was distributing the ball very well. Defensively, Toronto's All Canadian Mitch de Snoo, who had 5 goals and 2 assists when the two teams met at the beginning of the season, was held to just two assists by a stingy Gryphon defence. It was de Snoo's only scoreless game this season. The Gryphon defence limited the Varsity Blues to just three goals at regular strength; the rest coming on power play opportunities.

Brett Ulibkas (Oakville, ON) lead all point getters with 3 goals and 3 assists. Both Brendan Vogan (Toronto, ON) and Liam Corbett (Burlington, ON) had strong games, recording 3 goals and 2 assists each. Corbett only played the first quarter and a bit before coming out of the game for rookie attackman Colin Walker (Rexdale, ON). Walker contributed with 3 goals of his own. On the right attack side, veteran Brent Layton (Barrie, ON) had 4 assists while rookie James Short (Kitchener, ON) had 2 helpers.   Veterans Mike Cavanagh (Peterborough, ON), Todd Greer (Mulmur, ON) and Jackson Nishimura (Toronto, ON) had 2 goals each. Blaze McCullough (Burlington, ON) had a goal and an assist while both Alec Simons (Etobicoke, ON) and Ben Heidecker (Dundas, ON) each had an assist.

The Gryphons will start their playoff run next Saturday, Oct. 29, hosting Laurentian in a qualifying game; the winner of which will move on to the 2016 Baggataway Cup the following weekend.
