HAMILTON, ON - Friday at McMaster University, the Gryphons women's lacrosse team posted a 1-1 record at the opening day of the OUA Championship Tournament. The Gryphons are officially out of medal contention, but will continue to compete in the consolation side of the tournament with their next game coming on Saturday at 1:30pm against the Toronto Varsity Blues.
The OUA Championship tournament featured a 10-team field split into two divisions. The Gryphons were seeded 4th in the West Division and opened up their OUA postseason with a matchup against the 5th seed in the East division, the York Lions. The Gryphons, who defeated York 15-4 during their lone regular season meeting, would once again dominate play against the Lions, cruising to a 13-3 victory this time around. Rookie
Susanna Coss (Oakville, ON) led the way for the Gryphons with a five-goal performance, while
Erin Murray,
Charly Guatto and
Taylor Kidd each finished with two goals apiece.
With a trip to the semifinals on the line, the Gryphons then matched up against the top team in the conference with a 7:45pm start time against the undefeated Trent Excalibur. Trent finished atop the standings during the regular season with a perfect 13-0 record, and would prove to be too much for the Gryphons as they won 18-2.Â
Although the Gryphons are no longer able to advance to the medal rounds, they will still battle to see where they finish in the tournament's final rankings. Up next for the Gryphons, a 1:30pm game on Saturday versus the Toronto Varsity Blues. U of T lost their opening match to Brock on Friday. The Gryphons and Varsity Blues combined for a thrilling game during the regular season, which U of T managed to win 10-8.
