PLAYOFF PREVIEW: Gryphon Baseball Head to Toronto for OUA Championships

GUELPH, ON - Having momentum heading into a double knockout, OUA championship tournament is a good thing. The Gryphons have plenty of that. On Friday, October 14 at 12pm, the Gryphons will officially begin their quest for a conference banner as they head to Toronto to take part in the 2016 OUA Baseball Championships. The Gryphons face perennial powers Brock on Friday at noon. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Toronto with games taking place at the Audley Recreation Centre in Ajax, the same venue that played host to Pan Am Games baseball.

Of the 10-team OUA conference, the top six qualify for the year-end tournament. The Gryphons finished 4th in the standings, posting an 11-7 record. The Gryphons enter the OUA Championship tournament having won six straight games, the longest win streak in the conference, following doubleheader sweeps of Waterloo, York and Toronto. The Gryphons have received terrific production from the middle of their order with third baseman/DH Nick Interisano and utility man Matt Forer finishing 4th and 5th in the OUA in RBI's with 16 and 15, respectively. Interisano, now in his third year with the Gryphons, led the team with a .439 batting average after recording 25 hits in 17 games played. It was also the second-highest batting average in the league, next only to Laurier's Jonathan Brouse.

Owen Sound native Nathan Kramer has been one of the Gryphons most consistent pitchers all season long and is expected to get the ball on Friday versus the Badgers. The Gryphons, who are in search of their first OUA baseball title in school history, were knocked out of last year's OUA championship tournament following a pair of one-run losses to eventual champion Western and Ryerson.
