Guelph, ON – For the fourth time in the last five years, the Western Mustangs are OUA Figure Skating Champions. Wednesday afternoon at the Gryphon Centre, the Mustangs capped off the two day event with a strong performance in the synchro to finish with 73 points in the competition, 13 more than defending champion and host Guelph Gryphons. Listed below are both the final team standings as well as the results from the individual events.
The Gryphon varsity figure skating team took home the team silver medal this Wednesday (Feb. 18) on home ice at the 2015 OUA Figure Skating Championships. The team finished with a total of 60 points behind the Western Mustangs with 73 points. The Ryerson Rams took home the bronze medal with a total 57 points. For Western, it marked their fourth OUA title in the last five years. Guelph and Western have combined to win each of the last nine OUA titles (Western six, Guelph three).
The Gryphons entered day two in third place after the first day of competition. The team took home two medals on the day. Veteran
Leeann Duncan won her third medal of the championships, winning silver in the gold ladies freeskate. Graduating veteran
Francis Adamo captured the gold medal in the men's event, becoming an OUA All-star for the second year in a row. Other highlights from the day include a fourth place finish for fourth year Kelsey Shropshire in the senior silver solo dance, and a flawless short program skate by veteran Kelsey Sobkowich. It was an extremely close day of competition, which saw multiple lead changes. The overall championship came down to the final event – the synchro event. The Gryphons skated an amazing program in front of a packed and screaming Gryphon arena, and finished the day in second place. The Gryphons took home the overall silver medal and a total of seven OUA All-Stars. Final team standings as well as individual events listed below.
