Waterloo, ON - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team lost 3-sets-to-2 to the Waterloo Warriors on the road Saturday night. Set scores were 22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-20 & 12-15. The first set was back and forth between the teams before Waterloo forged a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. The Gryphons knocked the lead down to one at 20-19 but couldn't complete the comeback falling 25-22. Set 2 was close again but Guelph managed to open up a 20-17 lead. At that point, a 7-0 run by the Warriors allowed them to take the set 25-23. The third set saw the Gryphons forge a big lead thanks to a 7-0 run in the middle of the set to win it 25-16. Set 4 started with Waterloo jumping out to an early 7-3 lead but Guelph ground down the lead to tie it at 18 all. A 6 point run at the end of the set allowed the Gryphons to tie the match at 2 sets each with a 25-20 win. The fifth set was a close battle through the switch but a 3-0 run later allowed the Warriors to take the set and the match with a 15-12 win.

Coach Funk stated, "We had our chances in the second set but we couldn't hold the lead and that ultimately cost us the match. Waterloo dug well like they always do and we weren't consistent enough to get the win." Becky Breau led the Guelph offense with 16 points (15 kills, 1 block) followed by Maddie DeDecker with 15 (14 kills, 1 ace) while Kristen Almhjell was stellar on defense with 31 digs. The Gryphons are off until next Sunday, Nov. 15 when they play on the road at York at 2pm.
