Kingston, ON: The University of Guelph women's volleyball team lost 3-1 to the Queen's Gaels on the road Saturday afternoon. Set scores were 25-21, 23-25, 20-25 & 19-25. The first set started with the teams trading points but a 6-0 Guelph run in the middle of the set was the difference as the Gryphons won 25-21. Set 2 started evenly again with Queen's holding a 1 point edge at the technical timeout. Guelph managed to pull ahead at 22-19 but then a 4 point Queen's run gave them the lead back which they held on to win 25-23. The third set started with the Gryphons jumping out to an 8-3 lead only to see the Gaels close the gap. Guelph led at the technical timeout at 16-12 but they could not hold the momentum which allowed Queen's to win 25-20. Set 4 saw the Gaels open up an early 11-6 lead that they never relinquished finishing the match at 25-19.
Coach Funk said, "We played well early in the match but we were very inconsistent with both our execution and our ability to follow our game plan later and it cost us."
Victoria Golebiowski (8 kills, 4 aces, 1 block) and
Maddie DeDecker (13 kills) led the Guelph offense with 13 points each while
Kristen Almhjell led the defense with 27 digs. The Gryphons' road weekend continues Sunday when they take on the RMC Paladins at 1pm.
