FH: Gryphons Move into First Place with Win Over Western

Box Score
Guelph, ON - Wednesday night on home turf, the Gryphons Field Hockey team rolled over Western 9-0 to improve to 6-1 on the season. With the win, the Gryphons move into top spot in the OUA standings. Despite dominating play early on, it took a while for the Gryphons to put anything up on the scoreboard thanks in large part to some solid play from the Mustangs goalie. However, in the 32nd minute the Gryphons would find their break through with a goal from Gryphon Athlete of the Week Olivia Lane (Guelph, ON). The second year standout would score for the second time on the night just one minute later to push the Gryphons lead to 2-0. With that, the flood gates had opened as the goals started coming one after the other.
After Moon Weijens put the Gryphons up 3-0, All-Star Ally Chute needed just a three minute span to score a natural hat trick to push the Guelph lead to 6-0. Chute would finish the night with four goals and now leads the OUA with 12 on the season. Teammate Olivia Lane is not far behind with nine goals on the season.
Weijens finished with two, while Erin Houle rounded out the scoring.  Defender-turned-forward Jess Donaldson got in on the action by picking up an assist on Chute's fourth goal of the game.
Not to be lost in all of the goal scoring is the great defence the Gryphons have played this season. In seven games this year, the Gryphons have recorded five shutouts.
The Gryphons Field Hockey team has five games remaining on their regular season schedule. Up next, a matchup with the Waterloo Warriors on Wednesday, October 14. That will mark the Gryphons final home game of 2015.
