Box Score London, ON - Friday afternoon at Labatt Park in London, the Gryphons Baseball team lost 4-3 to the host Western Mustangs in the opening game of the 2015 OUA Championship tournament. The Gryphons, who are still alive in the double-knockout format, will play again on Saturday (Oct. 17) at 12pm against the loser of the Brock-Ryerson game - which is set to resume Saturday morning at 10am.
After posting a 12-6 regular season record, the Gryphons entered the 2015 OUA Baseball Championship on Friday as the No. 4 seed in the six team tournament. Trailing 1-0 to Western in the 3rd inning, the Gryphons would even things up on a two-out RBI double off the bat of leadoff man
Matt Allen (Toronto, ON). In the 4th inning, the Gryphons would take the lead on a RBI single off the bat of first baseman
Cooper Stocco (Toronto, ON). Stocco would come around to score on an error by Western later in the inning, as the Gryphons scored three straight runs to take a 3-1 lead. It wouldn't stay that way for long however, as Western answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the 4th. Both teams squandered good chances to take the lead over the next few innings, as the game remained tied at 3-3 until the 8th inning. The Mustangs would finally break the deadlock in the bottom of the 8th on a two out RBI single. That would prove to be the winning run as Western held on for a 4-3 victory.
Western pitcher Owen Boon threw a complete game and picked up the victory while Gryphons pitcher
Nate Kramer was tagged with the loss.
The Gryphons are still alive but cannot afford another loss. They will be in action on Saturday at noon at Labatt Park.
