Guelph, Ont. - September 20, 2014 – Gryphon baseball split a pair of games at home on Saturday at Hastings Field against the Toronto Varsity Blues. The Varsity Blues handed the Gryphons their first regular season loss of the year. Guelph now sits 7-1.
The Gryphons dropped the first game 12-11 and then rebounded to win the second game 6-5.
In game one the Varsity Blues got out to an early 3-0 lead in the game but Guelph responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. The Blues answered back with five runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead for good. A four-run top of the eighth sealed the one-run victory for the Blues.
The Gryphons were led by Matthew Forer who tallied one hit and three RBI's while Kyle Westwater had two hits and one RBI. Adam Odd led the Blues with two hits and three RBI, while Kravice Batts and Steven Hersch each had two hits in the win.
In the second game of the day, Toronto got out to an early 1-0 lead, but the Gryphons rallied with three in the third. The Blues tied it up in the top of the fifth, but Guelph went ahead again in the bottom of the inning. Both teams traded runs, with the Gryphons emerging with the narrow win.
Kyle Westwater once again played a crucial role, leading the Gryphons with two hits and two RBI's, Peter Riccardi tallied two hits while Justin Interisano had one hit and two RBI's.
Odd again led the Blues with four hits, while Jonathan Sartor had two hits and three RBI in the loss.
