The men's lacrosse team slipped to 0-2 on Friday after suffering a disappointing 14-4 loss to Western in London.

Despite control most of the first quarter play, the Gryphons were unable to score.  The team hit three posts and missed a wide open net.  Western managed only one goal half way through the frame to take a 1-0.

Guelph's fortunes changed dramatically when at quarter time the team was assessed a three minute penalty for an illegal stick.  Western scored twice on their power play and momentum swung heavily in their favour.  The Mustangs scored three more times, including another on a power play to take a 6-1 lead at the half.

Guelph late in the second quarter and early in the third to get back into the game but was unable to capitalize on a 2 minute power play opportunity.
"We couldn't capitalize on the power play early in the game and we squandered several chances later" said Gryphon Coach Sam Kosakowski.  "Our offense was just not functioning well and our defense finally got worn down".

Michael Lalani in his first start as the team's number one goaltender faced a barrage of shots from Western.  He made several good saves but Western's shooters got too many clean, unchecked looks and were able to translate their time and space into accurate shooting.

The Gryphons were outscored 8-3 in the second half on their was to the 14-4 loss.

Veteran midfielder and team captain Curtis Knight (Oshawa, ON), second year midfielder Michael Cavanagh (Peterborough, ON), and veteran Mike Burke (Wasaga Beach, ON) each had one for the Guelph.  Rookie Liam Corbett (Burlington, ON) also had his first as a Gryphon.

The Gryphons travel to Brock on Sunday to meet their rival at 2pm.
