The No. 6 Guelph Gryphons women's hockey team improved to 2-0-0 on the season with a 3-1 victory over the Ryerson Rams in Toronto on Wednesday night.
The Gryphons top line of
Jessica Pinkerton (Oshawa, Ont.),
Christine Grant (Mississauga, Ont.) and
Kaitlin Lowy (Toronto, Ont.) were the difference as each of the players finished the game with two point nights.
"We overcame a slow start. Stuck to the game plan, and got the job done. Credit to Ryerson, they came out for their home opener with a lot of energy. We were able to withstand their push and finished the game with two strong periods," commented Gryphon assistant coach Scott McMillan.
Pinkerton opened the scoring on the power play in the first period at the six minute mark. The Rams tied the game at 1-1 with a goal by Emma Rutherford before the Gryphons would regain the lead six minutes into the second period when
Alana Sims skated into the slot and fired a low wrist shot past Rams goalie Alex Armstrong (goal was credited to Kelly Gribbons). Five minutes later, Kaitlyn Lowy put Guelph up by two, scoring on the powerplay at the 10:33.
The Rams started the third period on the powerplay and almost made it a one-goal game but Gryphon goalie
Stephanie Nehring (Oshawa, Ont.) was able to get a pad on a Kayla Karbonik (St. Andrews, Man.) deflection.
The Rams fired 38 shots on net but could only get one past Nehring, who made several key stops throughout the night, especially while her team was shorthanded. Nehring turned away 37 of the 38 saves sent her way. Her counterpart, Alex Armstrong (Toronto) stopped 28 of 31 shots she faced in the loss.
The Gryphons will once again play in Toronto on Saturday afternoon at 4pm when they travel to U of T to take on the Varsity Blues.
