LACROSSE: Gryphons down Voyageurs on the road 14-6
Â
The men's lacrosse team capped off a tough three-game stretch with a convincing 14-6 win over Laurentian in Sudbury today. The win advances their record to 6-1.
Â
Weather was a factor, with the rain falling hard through the first two quarters. The Gryphons struggled at first to get their sticks dialed in in the rain but eventually found the mark half way through the first quarter. Â
Brett Ulbikas(Burlington, ON) took a great feed fromÂ
Curtis Knight (Oshawa, ON) and buried it top shelf for his first goal as a Gryphon and to tie the game at 1. The rest of the half was a see-saw affair that saw the teams trade goals and the Gryphons take a slim 5-4 halftime lead.
Â
The weather cleared at the beginning of the second half and Guelph took advantage of the break. After winning the opening faceoff of the second half the Gryphons had a long possession. They began to find the gaps in the Laurentian defense and had several open looks for good shots. It seemed only a matter of time before they found their mark. And find their mark they did, scoring 9 unanswered goals through the third and fourth quarters. When Laurentian was able to get possession, Guelph's ride pressed hard and the defense shut down their attack. In the net, second year Gryphon goaltenderÂ
Michael Lalani (Guelph, ON) was strong between the pipes making 13 saves on the day.
Â
"We were able to roll through our entire bench today and any time you can get everyone into a game is good for the team," said Coach Kosakowski before boarding the bus home. "I was proud of the way the guys approached today and proud of the way a number of our rookies played," he added.
Â
Rookie defensemenÂ
Nicholas Wordtmann Burlington, ON) saw time at longstick midfield and took some draws. Â
Matthew Lyons (Whitby, ON) played the lion's share of the game at close defense andÂ
Brett Scullion andÂ
Michael Hennessey both from Peterborough, ON stepped in to make some big hits.
Â
Gryphon scoring was led byÂ
Curtis Knight with 5 goals and 3 assists.Â
Ryan Serville (Pickering, ON) had 3 with 1 assist followed byÂ
Connor Deuchars (Toronto, ON) with 2 goals andÂ
Brendan Vogan (Toronto, ON) with a goal and an assist. Brett Ulbikas finished with a goal as did J
Jordan Costa (Mississauga, ON) and longstick defensemanÂ
Benjamin Vangalen(Orangeville, ON)…assisted byÂ
Michael Lalani in the net.
Â
The team would like to extend a big thank you to Jeff Vogan, team photographer and dad, for making the trip to shoot the game.
Next up for Guelph will be Laurier at home on October 2. Game time is 8pm.
