Men's Lacrosse: Gryphon's down Marauders 14-9
Â
Â
Lifted by a strong second half performance, the men's lacrosse team cruised to a 14-9 victory at home tonight against the McMaster Marauders.
Â
The win moves the Gryphons to 4-1 on the season. With a number of starters out of the lineup, the Gryphons were forced to run a short bench. Coach Kosakowski was pleased with the performance of a number of first year players who were thrust into starting rolls. "
Seamus Shanahan(Mississauga, ON) did a great job for us at attack.Â
Blaze McCullough (Burlington, ON) got his first start in an unfamiliar transition midfield roll andÂ
Matthew Lyons (Whitby, ON) came of the bench and played some great defense against Mac's leading scorer".
Â
The first two quarters were a back and forth affair with the Gryphon's taking a 6-5 lead at the half. While the Gryphons scored 5 times at full strength and recorded 1 power play goal, they gave up 4 goals on 7 man down situations. "We took too many penalties in the first half and gave McMaster a chance to stay in the game," said Kosakowski.
Five minutes into the 3rd quarter,Â
Jordan Critch (Orangeville, ON) made a great move behind the net and rolled the cage to score for the Gryphons. Guelph would score 4 unanswered goals in the quarter to break the game open before the Marauders was able to respond with only 1 second remaining in the frame.
Â
McMaster would get it as close as 10-7 in the 4th but could not mount a comeback. Guelph's offense replied each time Mac found the net outscoring the Marauders 4-3 in the last quarter to take the game 14-9.
Â
Leading the Gryphon charge on offense wasÂ
Jordan Critch with 1 goal and 5 assists followed byÂ
Connor Deuchars (Toronto, ON) with 5 goals.Â
Taylor Brown Peterborough, ON) had 3 goals, Shanahan had 2 andÂ
Michael Cavanagh (Peterborough, ON),Â
Jordan Costa (Mississauga, ON) andÂ
Curtis Knight (Oshawa, ON) had one each.
Â
For his efforts in transition, on loose balls, on the power play and on defense, Knight was awarded the skull. Honorable mentions go to Shanahan and McCullough for stepping into starting roles and to Ben Vangalen (Orangeville, ON) for dominating on face-offs.
Â
The Gryphons will be on the road this weekend, facing Toronto on Saturday and will make the long trip to Sudbury on Sunday to face Laurentian. Game times are 5pm and 1:30 pm respectively.
