Lacrosse vs. Laurier

Lacrosse - Men

Gryphons overtake Golden Hawks 14-7

By a score of 14-7 the men's lacrosse team cruised past Laurier last night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

Ryan Serville (Pickering, ON) opened the scoring for Guelph at the 5:29 mark of the first quarter.  Serville would go on to score 5 more and assist on another.   From there, the Gryphons never looked back.

The defense was solid in front of goaltender Jeremy Snider, who allowed only one past him on 10 shots in the first half.  The Gryphons took a 7-1 lead into the second half.

Guelph opened the second half on the power play and added two more from rookies Seamus Shanahan (Mississauga, ON) and Michael Cavanagh (Peterborough, ON), both firing lasers to the top left corner.

Laurier finally responded half way through the 3rd quarter scoring one at regular strength and another on the power play.  They would get to within 5 of the Gryphons but the depth of the Gryphon bench was too much for Laurier to overcome.
Once again, rookie longstick defensemen Mike Hennessey  (Peterborough, ON) came off the bench and delivered some punishing hits.  Brett Scullion (Peterborough, ON) was also tough off the bench causing several turnovers and recording 2 loose balls.  Goaltender Tyler MacKendrick (Whitby, ON) took over the pipes for the second half, facing 13 shots including several point blank late in the game.

Jordan Critch (Orangeville, ON) had another great night for Guelph, recording 7 assists and 1 goal.  Serville came out of the game after the third quarter but not before scoring 5 with 1 assist. Seamus Shanahan had 3 points on the night followed by Curtis Knight (Oshawa, ON) and Taylor Brown (Peterborough, ON) with a goal and an assist each. Jordan Costa (Mississauga, ON), Brendan Vogan (Toronto, ON), Michael Cavanagh and Calvin Holland (Fort St. John, ON) had one each.
Holland's goal came off a great cut to the net and was his first as a Gryphon.

Guelph has a break this weekend and will rest up for a crucial game at Western on October 11 at 7pm.
