Men's Lacrosse vs Western

Lacrosse - Men

Gryphons defeat Mustangs 6-5

The Gryphon men's lacrosse team improved to a 6-1 record with a 6-5 win over Western today at TD Waterhouse Stadium in London.

Connor Deuchars (Toronto, ON) figured in on 5 of Guelph's 6 goals with 3 goals and 2 assists,   Mike Burke (Caledon, ON), Joe Wasson (Peterborough, ON) and Eric Hubert (Mississauga, ON) all contributed 1 goal while Curtis Knight (Oshawa, ON) and Jordan Daradick (Welland, ON) each had an assist.

The game was a defensive battle pitting two of the league's strongest defences against each other.  Offensively, the Gryphons were stronger but struggled with turnovers, giving the ball away 24 times throughout the game.  The power play went 0-8, a rare stat for the otherwise potent offense.

"We had to rely heavily upon our defence and our goaltending today," said coach Kosakowski. "And they played tremendously."

The Gryphon defence recorded 21 cause-turnovers in the game and tallied 26 ground balls to Western's 16. Gryphon Longstick Jon Harnett captured the team's player of the game for causing 6 turnovers, recoding 2 ground balls and for shutting down Western's top scorer.  Despite Guelph's tough defence, Western still managed to outshoot the Gryphons 20-17 but Gryphon goaltender  Jeremy Snider had another solid game between the pipes.

The win put's Guelph at the top of the standings in the CUFLA West Division.  Next up for the Gryphons will be a road trip to McMaster this coming Wednesday, Oct. 3 and then are home to Laurier on Friday, Oct. 5.  Game time is 7pm.
