The Guelph Gryphon men's soccer team defeated the Western Mustangs 2-0 on Sunday afternoon to finish the weekend with a 1-1 record.
The Gryphons awoke Sunday morning to the news that three players would be unable to play (Robbie Murphy, Tim Flynn, Mohammed Heydarpour) due to injuries sustained on Saturday against Windsor.
The changes did little to effect the Gryphon men's attitudes, as they took on Coach Mason's game plan and battled as one cohesive unit right from the opening whistle.
Though Western dominated the possession in the early going, they were unable to create any clear chances as Guelph soaked up the pressure and turned back any attempted attack. As the game progressed, Guelph took on more possession and were able to create one or two clear chances before being gifted a goal when the Western goalkeeper came for a long ball and dropped it right at the feet of Guelph's Jared Agyemang who kept his cool and slotted it into the Western net as defenders bore down on him, giving Guelph a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes
Western attacked with great urgency in the second half, but were repelled at every opportunity by the central defensive pairing of Marc Bijman and Justin Springer, and the solid defensive play by the entire midfield. As Western pushed forward, and were becoming increasingly frustrated, Guelph took advantage. Ricky Maimonis did brilliantly to intercept a Western pass and drive forward before squaring the ball for Agyemang to again finish.
This is the second successive win in London for the Gryphons, who meet up with the weekend's opponents again next weekend at the Gryphon Soccer Complex
