The Gryphons baseball team split four games over the weekend to move to 5-3 on the season.Â
The Gryphs started off on the right foot with a 12-2 victory in game one versus Queens on Saturday. The offence was led by Wes Romak and Justin Interisano who each hit towering home runs. Noah Weldman added a pair of hits and veteran Brook Coatsworth pitched five strong innings for his first victory of the campaign.Â
The second game got off to a similar start with the Gryphs offence jumping out to an early 5-0 lead. Sean Molony had three hits to lead the attack that got Guelph out in front. Queens began staging a comeback that saw them cut the lead to 6-4. With the bases loaded, a single to center scored the fifth run but a spectacular throw to the plate by rookie Ben Elliot and a gutsy tag from catcher Kyle Westwater putout the tying run at the plate keeping the Gryphs one run lead intact. Another rookie, pitcher Jeff Snelgrove came in and did a great job picking up the save.
Sunday saw the Gryphs head down to St Catharines to take on the Brock Badgers. Game one saw Guelph jump out to a 2-0 lead. A pair of defensive miscues in the third allowed Brock to put up four runs against starter Brendan Sorichetti. Guelph could not push another run across until their final at bats in the seventh. Trailing 5-1, Interisano hit his league leading third home run of the season to cut the lead to 5-4. Marc Mongillo followed the home run up by nearly hitting one of his own, but they could not push the tying run across.Â
Team leader Ryan Thompson pitched a terrific game in game two. In a close game from the get go, the Gryphs took a 2-1lead into the sixth but gave up two runs to fall behind 3-2. Brock's bullpen shut the Gryphs down to hold on for their second one run win of the day.Â
"It's tough losing one run ballgames, but we did a lot of things right today and need to carry those positives forward into this week's games as we have five games against teams we are going to have to beat to make the playoffs," said head coach Matt Griffin.Â
The Gryphs are on the road all week playing Toronto Wednesday followed by two games versus Waterloo Saturday and another pair of games at McMaster Sunday.
