Gryphons go 3-0 in opening week of the OUA baseball season

The Gryphon baseball team got off to a hot start in week one of the 2012 OUA baseball season with wins over the Laurier Golden Hawks, Queens Gaels and Brock Badgers. Steve Fleisher led the team in hitting over the first week of the season driving in six runs and hitting over .400 helping the Gryphons to a 3-0 start to their season.

Wednesday night was the season opener on the road against a strong Laurier Golden Hawks team.  Lucas Borges took the mound for Guelph and threw seven strong innings in his season debut.  The Gryphs offence gave great at bats all night and got out to a 3-0 lead after five innings highlighted by a two run double by center field Kevin Winters.  With the score 3-2 in the seventh, Guelph added two more key runs against the Laurier bullpen including an RBI single from veteran third baseman Sean Molony.  Brendan Sorichetti recorded two key outs to get out of a jam in the eighth and shut the game down in the 9th inning for the save in an 8-5 victory.

Guelph carried the momentum from the Laurier game into their two games Sunday.  They opened the day with a 12-1 victory against Queen's that saw Ryan Thompson go the distance on the mound for the win and catcher Justin Interisano slug a mammoth three run home run to lead the Gryphs attack at the plate.

The afternoon game pitted the Gryphs against the perennial power house Brock Badgers.  Guelph played its best game of the season to date defeating Brock 8-2 in a convincing performance.  Sorichetti got the start and pitched six strong innings and got plenty of run support from the offence.  Steve Fleisher had a multi hit game including a two run double.  Leadoff hitter Peter Ricciardi set the table with a single and a double and OUA all star Wes Romak also provided two hits.

The Gryphons play their home opener Wednesday night against the Waterloo Warriors at 7 pm at Hastings field in Guelph looking to improve to 4-0 on the season.
