GUELPH, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons women's basketball team completed the weekend sweep tonight (Dec. 1) with a 78-57 win over the visiting Laurentian Voyageurs at the W.F. Mitchell Centre.
The Gryphons enter the winter break with a 4-3 record while the Voyageurs fall to 3-5 on the season.
Gryphon rookie Erica McFadden (Alma, Ont.) continued her strong play, notching a game-high 15 points to lead the Gryphons to their second straight win of the weekend. Kayla Goodhoofd (Oakville, Ont.) and Alyssa Shortt (Waterloo, Ont.) added 14 points apiece. Jasmine Douglas grabbed her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Leading Laurentian was OUA scoring leader Sasha Polishchuk with 15 points and six rebounds.
Guelph held most of the possession in the first quarter with strong rebounding from the entire starting five. On offence the Gryphons managed to stretch the Laurentian zone defence with strong shooting and rebounding. Mid-way through the quarter the Gryphons took a 14-6 lead following a pair of three pointers from Erica McFadden and Kayla Goodhoofd. For the Voyageurs Sasha Polishchuk led her team back in the first quarter dishing out a few assists and scoring seven points. The quarter finished with the Gryphons leading 22-15.
The momentum continued to be in the Gryphons favour as the next quarter got started with a pair of three-pointers from Dana Van Balkom. The Gryphons turned up the defensive pressure outscoring Laurentian 19-9 and forced nine turnovers. Guelph also managed to hold Polishchuk scoreless in second. The Voyageurs didn't score their first field goal until less than minute left in the quarter and four of their nine second quarter points were from the free throw line. The first half finished 41-24 for Guelph.
Coming out of the locker room in the second half the Voyageurs did a better job of moving the ball around and scoring. In the third quarter the Gryphons outscored the Voyageurs 20-17. Guelph's Alyssa Shortt had a strong quarter leading the team with seven in the quarter.
The Gryphons spent the remainder of the game continuing to dictate the pace of the game. In the last quarter the Gryphons made four of their eight three pointers in the game. They also showed their depth with a number of players getting on the scoresheet. In the last frame the Gryphons outscored Laurentian 17-16.
The Gryphons finished the first half of the season with a 4-3 record and are on the exam break now until the New Year. Guelph will open the second half of the regular season at home on January 3 against the Western Mustangs at 6:00 p.m.
