The Guelph Gryphons women's lacrosse team fell 14-8 to the top ranked Western Mustangs on Saturday (Oct. 6) and fell just short of avenging last years lost in the OUA gold medal game.
Â
The Gryphon's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, with goals from Amy Johnson (Ajax, Ont.) and Staci Morris (Brampton, Ont.). The Mustangs answered the challenge and scored six straight. The Gryphon defence turned up the heat with strong defence and scored three goals as a result of their intense pressure. Dana Skyvington (Mississauga, Ont.), Alyssa Nevills (Orangeville, Ont.) and Johnson all scored to close the gap. The Mustangs scored two more to finish the first half. The Gryphon's defence played well from end-to-end again during the second half causing many turnovers, but were unable to capitalize on all of their opportunities.
Â
Scoring in the second half for the Gryphons were Amy Johnson and Jade Sullivan (Ennismore, Ont.).
Â
"I was happy with my team's effort, they fought hard and played as a team for 60 full minutes," said head coach Steph Green. "There are some things that we are going to work on over the next couple of weeks to prepare for the OUA championships in three weeks."
Â
Next up for the Gryphons will be the final two games of the regular season against McMaster (Oct. 14 – 11:30AM) and UOIT (Oct. 13 – 8AM) at Laurier this upcoming weekend.
