The Gryphons baseball team dropped their season opener 5-4 on Wednesday (Sept. 7) night in London.
The Mustangs broke a 3-all tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with a pair of runs. Guelph made a late run in the ninth inning with a run but it wasn't enough for the win. Guelph's Brook Coatsworth (Guelph, Ont.) took the loss for the Gryphons after giving up five runs off nine hits and 4.26 ERA. Releiving Coatsworth was Ryan Thompson and Kevin Lagerquist (Brampton, Ont.).
Scoring for the Gryphons was Wes Romak (London, Ont.) with a triple and two singles. Steve Fleisher (Brampton, Ont.) tallied a double and a single while March Mongillo (Toronto) had two singles and Peter Ricciardi (Pickering, Ont.) with a single.
New this season will be the opening Kick Off Tournament which is hosted by Laurier but will be played in Guelph at Pearson Park. The Gryphons will take on the Brock Badgers and Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday. On Sunday they will play Queens and McMaster.
